Are you ready for another magical proposal story? Jessica and Matt had traveled to Europe for the first time and everyone suspected London or Paris would be the locale where he would pop the question. But, to everyone’s surprise, Matt had other plans in mind. When the duo got back from their European trip, they headed to Newport, Rhode Island; one of their favorite places to venture to for a date night. Before dinner at the Red Parrot, Jessica and Matt stopped by their favorite spot overlooking the ocean during golden hour. “It was June 7th so it was fairly chilly by the ocean so I said lets not stay too long but Matt was stalling, trying to wait for the few other bystanders to leave. After a few minutes go by he comes and stands in front of me as he can tell I’m frozen now, I thought he was trying to block the wind.. and said he had the deal of a lifetime for me. He got down on one knee, ring in hand shaking like a leaf. Matt was so nervous he went to put in on the wrong hand. We must have stood hugging for 10 minutes just soaking in the moment, private and alone in OUR spot. He has surprised me many times, but this by far was the best one.” Continue reading below for more details on this adorable duo’s engagement story captured through the lens of Coli Michael Photography!
From Coli Michael Photography…Matt and Jessica were among the thousands of couples that had to pivot their wedding plans, so I wanted to share their fabulous fall engagement session from last year! Truly two of the sweetest, most down-to-earth souls I’ve ever met, we spent magic hour dancing in the turning autumn leaves and watching the sun go down over the lake. It was magic!
There are many things that make our relationship special. For us, knowing I have my best friend literally, I can go to him with anything whether it’s a problem or something funny it could be completely ridiculous he is there without hesitation. I’m big with horoscopes and coincidentally him and I are the least compatible signs which I still have yet to understand, but maybe that’s why we work so well together. He let’s me be unapologetically myself. He reminds me that life’s details don’t always need to be planned out. His personality is very much laid back whereas I can be high strung at times- type A personality but that’s where we find our balance. At the beginning of our relationship I introduced him to exploring so many new places he had never been to and this is still something we look forward to. Day trip adventures or planning a vacation- the best one yet was my surprise trip to Europe last spring which was a Christmas gift in 2018. Most weekends you can find us hanging with our 5 year old German Shepherd, Bane he is the man or brewery hopping. One of the first things that really brought us together too if you can believe it was our love and passion for modifying cars! Not something most females are into but its a love of his and I grew up in a household loving cars so we bonded over this immediately.
We had both been in long term relationship’s previously and I think were both skeptical in the beginning of getting hurt again but there was a sense of wholesomeness with Matt almost immediately. Honesty and being open with each other is huge. Effective communication in any relationship is a must though some days seem harder then others to get that, that’s why nothing in life is perfect and requires constant effort. Everyone wants to live a fairy tale life right, but the reality is there will always be highs and lows in a relationship, you have to always make the time and put in the effort. We just celebrated our 7 year anniversary. Early on in the relationship I knew I could see a future with Matt, but I didn’t want to get ahead of myself. By our 2nd and definitely by our 3rd anniversary I knew I had all of his heart.
Wedding planning for me has been a cycle of highs and lows. It started off really exciting, picking a venue, finding my incredible photographer who it feels like I’ve known for years, starting to play with color palettes. I’ve dreamed of the big day ever since I was a little girl. What the floral’s would look like or my dress which is also gorgeous and I can’t wait to wear it. COVID-19 put a damper on our big day which was supposed to take place August 14th,2020 but I’ve accepted that this was all meant to happen for a reason. It gives me more time to focus on whats important. Maybe it’s scaling back the guest list to have a more intimate wedding, Matt’s always talked about something small or even a destination wedding. Heck, we wanted an October wedding, after all fall is our favorite time of the year but the venue slightly pushed us with going to August for “better incentives”. So re-planning on a clean slate I think is the way to go and it will send out positive energy which this year has been lacking. I want guests to arrive to our wedding excited, not thinking about a pandemic. I’m most excited to see all the details, big and small come together. To bring new traditions and uniqueness to our special day. I don’t like to follow all the trends, sometimes it’s fun to live outside the norms.
